Deceptive Hearts Exposed
When Jesus was accused of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub (Matthew 12:24), His opponents—whom He called an “evil and adulterous generation”—masked their hostility with feigned reverence. Though they addressed Him as “Teacher,” their hearts were far from Him. Their request for a sign revealed their true nature:
“Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we wish to see a sign from You.’ But He answered them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:38-40, ESV).
This passage challenges many, yet its meaning is unlocked only through spiritual discernment. The Bible contains no contradictions—only truths revealed to those whom God calls (John 10:27). The rest continue diligently studying the Scriptures, perhaps seeking to attain a status of honour. Jesus declared that no one could come to Him unless drawn by His Father (John 6:44).
The Demand for Signs: A Satanic Echo
The Pharisees’ demand for a sign mirrored Satan’s temptation in the wilderness:
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down…” (Matthew 4:6).
Let us consider Satan’s motive in tempting Jesus: If Jesus were not the Son of God, whom did Satan intend to acknowledge as His Father? He understood that Jesus could not have been his own son, as Satan himself had never created anything. Therefore, whom did he anticipate Jesus would recognise as His Father, if not God? Satan sought to perpetuate the falsehood that humanity is not the offspring of God.
Similarly, what evidence did those seeking a sign from Jesus desire, apart from what was affirmed in their sacred Scriptures? Caught between the realms of physical and spiritual existence, humanity remains unnecessarily mystified, despite being created in God’s image. Jesus declared that with faith as small as a mustard seed (Luke 17:6), nothing would be impossible for humanity. Yet, as Jesus affirmed humanity’s divine nature, His audience obstinately resisted such a revelation, as is the case today.
Just as the devil attempted to manipulate Jesus into demonstrating His divinity, the religious leaders—unwitting instruments of Satan—sought to test Him under the pretext of piety. Their scepticism arose from misguided zeal; they accused Jesus of violating the Law (e.g., Sabbath observance) and failed to reconcile Him with their preconceived notions of the Messiah. Their adherence to Judaism was motivated by convenience and the pursuit of human honour, rather than genuine devotion and service.
Jesus revealed that their error was more profound: they depended on human reasoning rather than Scripture. Similar to an adulteress caught between two husbands, they professed loyalty to God while advancing the enemy’s agenda. This dynamic has been evident in Zimbabwe’s political landscape, where individuals adopt the role of opposition while simultaneously serving the interests of the establishment. The most remarkable aspect of Christianity is that it is impossible to deceive God.
The Messiah’s True Credentials
The Pharisees expected a Messiah who would fit their traditions—perhaps a scholar like Gamaliel (Acts 5:34-39). But Jesus fulfilled prophecy, not human criteria. His authority was validated not by signs on demand but by the Word of God. The most unpopular people in the Christian world are those who maintain an unwavering commitment to the Scriptures. To be accepted, you have to be a theological scholar, rather than ground yourself on Scriptural references.
This arises from the tendency to disregard individuals based on their racial background, social class, or level of education, without acknowledging their divine origins. It underscores a persistent danger: equating human standards with divine truth. Even in the present, many seek “proof” of God’s work, overlooking the essence of faith, which is defined as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).
Spiritual Adultery: The Root of Hypocrisy
Jesus rebuked their adulterous hearts—not for physical unfaithfulness, but for their divided allegiance. They feigned devotion to God while simultaneously adopting the values of the world. Yet, Christ’s standard demands purity. One cannot embody two opposing natures simultaneously. Such hypocrisy is more dangerous than outright rejection, as illustrated in John’s prophecy in the Book of Revelation:
“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot… Because you are lukewarm, I will spit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16).
The parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:1-14) highlights the expulsion of the guest lacking a wedding garment, representing the righteousness of Christ. Professing faith without genuine transformation signifies spiritual infidelity. This parallels those who commit adultery for selfish motives and individuals who declare faith in God while deliberately continuing in sinful behaviour.
The Sign of Jonah: Resurrection and Repentance
The only sign Jesus offered was His resurrection—the ultimate vindication of His Messiahship. Many Pharisees later believed (Acts 6:7), but only after the Father drew them (John 6:44).
This underscores a divine principle: True faith is God’s work, not man’s effort. Christianity thrives not by persuasion but by the Spirit’s conviction.
Conclusion:
The Call to Wholehearted Faith
In its physical form, humanity holds no enduring significance, as it is fated to perish within the confines of the material universe. Wholeheartedly embracing the teachings of Jesus stands as the sole source of true solace for humankind. The legacy of an adulterous generation serves as a profound cautionary tale for those seeking reconciliation with the one true Master of salvation.
Reject hypocrisy
God despises lukewarm devotion. The gravest transgression lies in merging opposing principles, as its consequence mirrors the effect of coming into contact with live positive and negative electrical currents.
Trust Scripture over signs
Prophecy, derived from God’s word, not spectacle, confirms truth. A truthful individual is guided by God’s word rather than by miraculous manifestations. However, what God abhors is the pretence of faith in Him when the reality is otherwise.
Embrace repentance
The Kingdom belongs to those who yield fully to Christ. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Although not a sinner, Jesus mingled with sinners for the purpose of their redemption. Likewise, those called to Christianity are expected to manifest the righteousness of God, as possessing the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). Jesus’ words require no sceptics demanding proof, but the sheep who “hear His voice” (John 10:27).
This brings us to the reason why Christianity should not depend on proselytising, but on God’s direction. Jesus declared, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” (John 6:44). It takes an individual with understanding and faith to acknowledge Jesus’ Messiahship, without being solely captivated by His resurrection. The unacceptable stance, as illustrated by Jesus, is professing Christianity without genuine belief. This underscores the necessity of discerning between God’s Kingdom and the kingdoms of this world.
