Every Human Was Born a Leader

Leadership holds significant importance, as numerous societal challenges—be they political, economic, or cultural—arise from its mismanagement. In Zimbabwe, for example, analysts attribute the nation’s decline to poor governance, which has rendered citizens passive observers instead of active participants. However, these same critics frequently fail to exhibit the leadership qualities they demand from others.

Leadership is not an exclusive quality reserved for a select few; it is an innate potential present within every individual. Yet, self-deception and a lack of self-awareness often obscure this reality. The mission of Jesus is to dispel this confusion. Leadership does not necessitate competition, as each person is uniquely endowed to lead within their own sphere of influence.

Leadership is Responsibility in Action

Every individual possesses leadership qualities suited to their unique capacities. A skilled tea brewer may not thrive in corporate governance, just as a CEO might lack proficiency in artisan crafts. Leadership involves accepting responsibility—an inherent ability awaiting realisation. To unlock this potential, one must contemplate eight fundamental questions:

  1. “Who Am I?”

This question delves into the essence of human identity, transcending the name given at birth. Scripture reveals that humanity was created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27), imbued with inherent worth and purpose. Yet, many succumb to imitation, idolising others while disregarding their own uniqueness. Jesus embodied profound self-awareness, encountering opposition precisely because He understood His divine identity. True leadership emerges from self-discovery.

  1. “Where Do I Originate?”

Humanity’s origin is divine. Jesus’ conflict with the Jews arose because they rejected His claim to a heavenly origin, despite them sharing the same divine source (Genesis 1:26-27). Like Jesus, we must recognise our spiritual heritage. Those who align with His personality and teachings (Romans 8:15) embrace their true lineages as originating directly from God.

  1. “Why Am I Here?”

Purpose transcends both circumstances and race, regardless of being Black or White. Every individual is uniquely placed within a specific environment and situation for a distinct and meaningful reason. Jesus fulfilled His mission with unwavering determination, undeterred by societal pressures or the expectations of those rooted in Jewish traditions. While many perceive life as centred on conformity or self-indulgence, each person bears a divine purpose known only to themselves and God. Effective leadership demands a clear understanding of one’s mission..

  1. “What Am I Capable Of?”

Human potential is vast, though often incomprehensible to many, yet it is constrained by sin and self-doubt. Each individual possesses unique abilities that no one else can replicate. This prompts a profound question regarding the purpose of life. Rather than seeking external validation, one should ask: How can I serve others? Jesus, despite lacking formal education, demonstrated that divine wisdom transcends human qualifications. Every person is born with a purpose, endowed with unparalleled talents and abilities. Complaints about limitations often reveal an unrecognised identity, where one erroneously identifies with another..

  1. “Where Is My Life Headed?”

For believers, Heaven is the ultimate destination, yet its glory mirrors the stewardship practised on earth. Every action plants seeds for the future, and this is realised through a commitment to serving others in their moments of need. Those who criticise leaders without contributing meaningful effort to effect change cannot expect a reward. Legacy is constructed daily through small actions, whether they add value to humanity or not—what will yours be?

  1. “Why Does Evil Exist?”

Evil is often blamed on Satan, yet ignorance perpetuates it when one is engaged in self-centred activities. Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Darkness flees where light shines. Accidents, for instance, frequently arise from human error rather than being attributed to demonic forces. Effective leadership necessitates the ability to distinguish between spiritual shortcomings and human failings. The prevalence of evil is often a consequence of inaction by those possessing the knowledge and means to address it.

  1. “What Is Freedom?”

Freedom is not the absence of boundaries but the power to choose rightly (Luke 4:18). Freedom entails the capacity to act in alignment with one’s innate abilities and personal comfort. Education, though liberating, can foster pride if misapplied. Genuine knowledge humbles, empowering us to elevate others without arrogance. Jesus perplexed the learned because His wisdom surpassed their established systems (John 7:15).

  1. “What Is the Role of Jesus?”

Jesus, the Second Adam, came to restore humanity’s lost identity. As the way, the truth, and the life, He guides us in pursuing the path of righteousness. The fall in Eden arose from prioritising sensory judgment over divine truth. Jesus redirects us to our spiritual essence, preparing us for eternity. His threefold mission encompasses atoning for past sins, imparting divine teachings, and exemplifying the righteous way to live.

Conclusion: Awakening the Leader Within

Leadership encompasses various dimensions and reflects an individual’s proficiency in their field. It highlights personal responsibility, exemplifies accountability, and embodies a distinctive capability inherent in every person. This viewpoint encourages self-reflection, allowing individuals to acknowledge their intrinsic sense of conscientiousness. By addressing eight core questions, one can develop effective leadership skills.

By contemplating these questions, we rediscover our divinely bestowed potential. Leadership extends beyond titles, emphasising responsibility that pertains to every individual. Zimbabwe—and indeed the world—needs leaders who embody self-awareness, purpose, and adherence to higher principles. The choice is yours: Will you remain an observer, or will you embrace your calling?
